The geography of Coney Island is interesting as it is the westernmost of the barrier islands of Long Island. It stretches four miles in length and one half mile in width. The island was separated from the main part of Brooklyn by Coney Island Creek.

The name of the Coney Island has a history. The earliest inhabitants of this island used to cal the island as 'Narrioch' which means land without shadows. They used to call it so because most of the island has a long beach area which received warm sunlight all day long.

After the Civil War, the Coney Island became a resort. With an easy availability of rail lines, steamship and access to beach it became a popular destination in no time at all. Tourists started to pour in the island for its hotels, public and private beaches, horse racing, amusement parks and other less reputable entertainments such as Three-card Monte, other gambling etc.

The Coney Island is known for its source of amusements. Between the time of 1880 and World War II Coney Island became the biggest amusement park in the United States. Every year Coney Island attracts millions of people. Today the amusement area at Coney Island contains various rides, games like skeeball, ball tossing, and a sideshow, games of shooting and throwing, tossing skills and many more.
